VWM Write about Westside Motors

Over the years Westside Motors have been featured and praised in various Volkswagen magazines for their outstanding enthusiasm and knowledge when it comes to these beloved vehicles.
VW Magazine writes…

“One man who certainly thinks the new Beetle to be a worthy successor to the old one is Steve Moran, from Woodford Green in Essex, and he should know – he’s spent most of his working life restoring old beetles in the workshops in Woodford Green.

Steve’s own story with the Marque goes back to 1984 when, along with a friend of his, he brought a 1965 beetle for the princely sum of £30. After overhauling the engine and mechanicals and fitting a new clutch, they gave it a fresh coat of paint and promptly drove it all the way to Corfu in Greece.

Not once in the 3000-mile journey did it let them down and on their return to England they sold it – principally because they couldn’t decide between them who should take procession of the car, Steve soon set up in business restoring Beetles for a profit. Westside Motors was born.

Initially Westside Motors specialised in VW Cabrios, and soon made a name for themselves dealing with these most desirable of Beetle models. Although they’ve since diversified their portfolio, Cabrios are still an important part of the trade at Westside – Steve himself is a stalwart member of the Cabrios members club (GB) and has developed a particular reputation for trouble shooting the fuel injection systems fitted to late model Californian cars.

Amongst the list of star cars that have emerged from the Westside workshop are Stan Rason’s concours winning ’65 Cabrio; Charles Oldroyd’s magnificent Stratos Silver Blue ’56 that was featured in The Volksworld Magazine and VWM ‘Beetle collection’, and Dave Jones’s Green ’71 1500 Cabrio.

More recently they’ve diversified into importing and selling classic VW Campers.

The customised Budweiser Camper Van

Westside Motors were also commissioned by Budweiser to prepare 7 VW Split Screen Camper Vans as prizes to be given away in a spectacular promotional campaign by the Beer Company and Virgin Radio. Chris Evans the DJ at the time held the competition on his daytime radio show and presented the winners with their prizes. With the demand changing from air-cooled to water-cooled Steve Moran decided after many years to go with the flow by employing technicians with the knowledge and the experience needed for the repair and understanding of the modern day water-cooled VW while still carrying out repairs and servicing to the classic Volkswagen.
